In cases of acute care needs

In acute cases, you can take up to ten working days off to provide nursing care for your relative. Please inform your employer immediately.

During this time, you are entitled to a care allowance (wage replacement benefit: approx. 90 percent of your net salary), which you can apply for from the care insurance fund or the private care insurance company of the person in need of care by submitting a medical certificate.

If you provide full-time or part-time nursing care at home, you can claim up to six months of nursing care leave. You can accompany your relative(s) for up to three months during the final stages of their life. If you have a minor relative, you are also entitled to six months of nursing care leave if they are cared for outside the home. Please give at least ten days' notice before the start of your nursing care leave.

If six months is not enough, you are entitled to up to 24 months of family nursing care leave (partial exemption, 15 hours per week minimum working time) for home nursing care or, in the case of minor close relatives, also for care in an outside facility. The notice period is eight weeks.

Once you have given notice, you are protected against dismissal. However, this protection begins a maximum of twelve weeks before the start of care.
