Summer School for Early Career Researchers
Next Level Career Development2nd-3rd June 2026 | Freiburg, Germany
Join us for a two-day immersive SPP Summer School on career development for early career researchers, taking place at the Caritas Tagungszentrum in Freiburg. This interactive programme is designed to help you actively shape your career path in today’s rapidly evolving research landscape and beyond.
Who is it for?
This Summer School is aimed at PhD candidates, postdocs, and other early career researchers who want to gain clarity, confidence, and practical tools for their next career steps.
What to expect
Led by the workshop instructor Prof Daniel Mertens, participants will work on key aspects of career development in academia and beyond, combining evidence-based career strategies with modern AI-supported tools.

The programme covers:
Self-assessment and defining your personal career goals
Strategic career planning and decision-making
Visibility, networking, and personal branding
Identifying and communicating your unique professional value
Interview skills, negotiation strategies, and opportunity capture
After the Summer School, you will leave with:
A clearer career vision and actionable next steps
Increased confidence in presenting yourself and your strengths
Practical tools for networking, interviews, and negotiations
First-hand experience in using AI responsibly for career development
A distinctive feature of this Summer School is the use of AI as an active sparring partner: participants will train interview situations, adapt their applications to specific job offers, explore alternative career paths, and refine their professional profiles—using AI to challenge assumptions, reframe self-doubt, and sharpen how their skills and experiences are presented—taking career planning and applications to an entirely new level.
The format is highly interactive, combining short inputs, exercises, peer exchange, and hands-on practice.
A detailed description of the workshop can be found here: Next Level Career Development using AI Assistants
Moreover, there is going to be a social event for networking and exchange in the evening.
