Forum Gesundheitsstandort Baden-Württemberg: Together for Healthier!
On the initiative of Minister President Winfried Kretschmann, the "Baden-Württemberg Healthcare Forum" was founded in 2018 in order to achieve a closer connection and networking between the areas of research, healthcare and healthcare provision and to develop Baden-Württemberg into a healthcare location of the highest possible standard. The forum currently brings together around 600 experts from hospitals and care facilities, research institutes and universities as well as biotech, pharmaceutical and medical technology companies from Baden-Württemberg. All these players want to contribute to a strategic process with the support of the state government in order to strengthen the healthcare industry and further improve healthcare provision for people in Baden-Württemberg.

"Turning Data-Driven Research into Health Benefits"
Working together for more personalized cancer medicine
On 1 May 2023, a BMBF-funded joint project with 24 sites from all over Germany was launched with the aim of creating a permanent infrastructure for the secure exchange of data on personalized cancer therapy. After several online meetings, the project participants had the opportunity to meet in person at a symposium on October 24/25, to get to know important national stakeholders from the major oncology consortia and to network more intensively.
The symposium took place in the auditorium of the University of Freiburg and included various scientific presentations as well as a poster session and several interdisciplinary working groups. During the breaks and in the evening of the first day, there was plenty of space and time for discussions, exchanges and getting to know each other personally.
Conclusion of the participants: Getting to know each other personally was extremely important in order to be able to tackle the challenging project even better together.
BMBF funds collaborative project coordinated by Freiburg University Hospital with a total of 11 million euros / New infrastructure to enable secure exchange of biomedical data and facilitate targeted cancer therapies
A new collaborative project on personalized cancer medicine is being funded by the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) with a total of 11 million euros since May 2023 as part of the Medical Informatics Initiative. The joint project PM⁴Onco aims to improve data transfer between oncological centers of excellence for the benefit of tailored therapies. It is coordinated at the University Medical Center Freiburg, for which the Medical Faculty of the University of Freiburg will receive 1.8 million euros of the funding.
"PM⁴Onco is intended to create a permanent infrastructure for the secure exchange of data from clinical and biomedical research. At first, this sounds very technical, but the focus is on people affected by rare and difficult-to-treat cancers - for them, we want to make starting points for targeted treatments easier to find," says Prof. Dr. Dr. Melanie Börries, Director of the Institute for Medical Bioinformatics and Systems Medicine at the University Medical Center Freiburg, who is coordinating the collaborative project. "The precise analysis of genetic alterations in tumors at the respective disease stage is crucial so that molecular tumor boards in the oncological centers of excellence can recommend the most individually appropriate therapy."
The collaborative project combines the expertise and preliminary work of all four consortia of the German government's medical informatics initiative and the oncology centers of excellence in Germany, and also involves the cancer registries. Patient feedback on quality of life and treatment success will also be collected and integrated via questionnaires. A patient representative provides support in an advisory capacity in order to incorporate the perspective of those affected. Regular workshops for patients and citizens are also part of the project, as is the promotion of young scientists.
"PM⁴Onco has the potential to decisively strengthen data-driven personalized medicine in cancer therapy," says Prof. Dr. Lutz Hein, Dean of the Medical Faculty of the University of Freiburg and member of the Board of Directors of Freiburg University Hospital. "Digitization and cross-center data exchange are important prerequisites of top university medicine. We have been very successful in both fields in the past and are pleased to be able to contribute our findings in exchange with other institutions."
