Online Workshop: AI for Researchers

Unlocking New Potentials and Avoiding Pitfalls

14th April 2026, 9 a.m - 1 p.m. | Online

Artificial intelligence has rapidly become part of everyday research practice. Most researchers use generative AI —but often without a clear framework for quality, ethics, or long-term impact. This online workshop is designed to help you move beyond ad-hoc use and develop a more strategic, confident, and responsible approach to AI in research.

You will learn how to cut through the noise of tools and opinions and focus on what genuinely adds value to your work. The workshop combines conceptual clarity with hands-on practice, enabling you to integrate AI into your workflow in ways that save time without compromising scientific integrity.

Who is it for?

This workshop is open to all SPP members, from early career researchers to senior group leaders, who are interested in using AI effectively and responsibly for research-related tasks such as writing, literature analysis, and image generation.

What to expect

Led by the instructor Dr Tullio Rossi, this workshop focuses on the responsible and effective use of generative AI across the research workflow. It combines ethical and legal foundations with practical applications that support everyday research tasks.

Topics include:

  • Avoiding common AI mistakes (fabricated references, visual inaccuracies)
  • Effective prompting frameworks
  • Specialised research tools for literature reviews
  • Creation of a custom AI assistant for grant writing
  • Finding funding opportunities with AI
  • Image creation for research papers
  • Data privacy considerations and ethical boundaries
  • Tool recommendations and subscription advice

Outcomes

By the end of the workshop, partipants will be able to use AI more intentionally and confidently in their research. They will know how to improve the quality of AI outputs through better prompting, avoid common ethical and legal pitfalls, and integrate AI into their workflow to reduce time spent on repetitive tasks. The goal is not automation for its own sake, but smarter research practices that free up time for thinking, analysis, and creativity.
