Note: Freiburg is a little charming city – a car, especially in the town center, is more of an obstacle than a help. All the locations can be reached by foot within a few minutes as well as by tram.

Airports for travel to Freiburg are listed below.

The closest commercial airport is the EuroAirport Basel Mulhouse Freiburg (BSL), served by a limited number of airlines. The best-connected major hub is Frankfurt International Airport (FRA). Slightly closer than FRA is Zürich International Airport (ZUR), though transfer times between ZUR and Freiburg are usually longer than from FRA.

Frankfurt International Airport

A major advantage of FRA airport is that it is directly linked to the German railway system, with direct trains to Freiburg's main train station (Hauptbahnhof; HBF) every two hours. Additional connections include a change at either Mannheim or Mainz. Upon arrival at FRA, follow the signs to the long-distance train station (Fernbahnhof). We recommend booking tickets in advance – you can do so here by selecting "Frankfurt(M) Flughafen Fernbf" as Start and "Freiburg(Breisgau) Hbf" as Destination. This trip should cost approximately 67 Euro (plus seat reservation), if booked last minute, or ~20 Euro if booked sufficiently early.

EuroAirport Basel-Mulhouse-Freiburg

If you arrive at BSL, please make sure you head for the exit marked Germany/France (rather than Switzerland), located to your left hand side as you enter the baggage claims area.

For transfers to Freiburg, you have the following options:

Onwards travel from EuroAirport Basel-Mullhouse-Freiburg

- via public transportation

The Freiburger Airportbus will take you from BSL airport to Freiburg main train station in roughly 1 hour (depending on traffic).

- by rental car

If you decide to rent a car, please make sure you specify ‘Mulhouse’, not merely ‘BSL’, as this will take you to the French/German side of the airport (on the Swiss side, it will cost double for the same car...).

Zürich Airport 

Once you arrive at the airport, proceed to the train station. Travel to Freiburg is either via Zürich and Basel SBB, or directly via Basel SBB. Please book your tickets in advance, which can be done here by selecting "Zürich Airport" as the Start and "Freiburg (Breisgau) Hbf" as your Destination. This will cost 50-60 Euro.

Arrival by Train:

Freiburg’s main train station (Hauptbahnhof, HBF) is centrally located, and within less than 10 minutes walking distance (~700 m) of the main conference venue. Many hotels and the old part of town are within easy walking distance, and there is a taxi rank in front of the station.

Arrival  by Car:

We advise against arriving by car, as parking, especially within the city centre, is rare and expensive. If you should decide to bring your car, you may wish to pre-book a parking space at your hotel.
