Inhalt:

Scientific publications provide useful evidence that can inform medical decision-making regarding diagnosis, prognosis and treatment. It is, thus, important that such publications are based on valid methodology and that statistical analysis of data is methodologically solid. The aim of this course is to familiarize medical students with the statistical terminology and methodology of modern medical literature so that they can 1) judge the validity of the statistical analysis of published studies and 2) undertake their own statistical analysis.

Particular emphasis will be placed on performing all stages of statistical analysis using the freely available statistics software R (https://www.r-project.org). R is one of the most popular general software for statistical analyses, with one of its exceptional features being the use of additional user-written R packages (https://cran.r-project.org/web/views). RStudio is a graphical front-end which makes the use of R much easier.

The first two sessions will provide a comprehensive introduction to R and RStudio; no prior experience with the software is required. The next sessions will be divided into a theoretical presentation followed by practical exercises in R. Participants who wish can bring their own data to analyze in the last session ‘Examples’.
