Halbritter Laboratory

Nephrogenetics

Focus

Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is an increasingly common condition with various causes. Genetic factors play an important role in many forms of CKD, but their mechanisms and clinical implications are not fully understood. The Halbritter Lab Nephrogenetics was founded in August 2016 at the University of Leipzig. In 2021, when Jan Halbritter was appointed to a Heisenberg Professorship at Charité, the lab moved to Berlin to expand our research activities in a translational direction through our affiliation with the Center for Rare Kidney Diseases (CeRKiD). In April 2026, Jan Halbritter assumed the Chair of Nephrology at the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Freiburg and was appointed Medical Director of the Department of Internal Medicine IV—Specializing in Nephrology—at the University Medical Center Freiburg.
Our primary focus is on investigating the underlying mechanisms of hereditary CKD, such as polycystic kidney disease (ADPKD), AD-tubulointerstitial kidney disease (ADTKD), CKD of uneXplained cause (CKDx), and disorders of kidney stone formation.
