Köttgen Laboratory

Our laboratory is interested in the molecular design and functional specificity of signal transduction pathways. One of the fundamental challenges of modern biology is to understand how cells generate, integrate, and respond to dynamic cues in order to exert their roles within multicellular organisms.

We are using an interdisciplinary approach to investigate signal transduction at all levels of complexity: from single molecules to whole organisms. We study signaling in the context of physiological and pathological functions of proteins involved in monogenic and complex genetic diseases.

Our research focuses on three main topics:

  1. TRP channels and calcium signaling
  2. Autosomal Dominant Polycystic Kidney Disease
  3. Renal urate transport and gout
