Jonas Fuchs & Team
Our lab is part of the Section Clinical Virus Genomics. We combine computational virology, next generation sequencing and molecular virology to tackle several research questions.
Research Topics

Viruses exists as mutant swarms, so called viral quasi-species, that allow flexible adaptions to external selection pressures (such as antiviral treatment or the hosts’ immune system). We are particular interested how viral quasi-species populations change during persistent infections in e.g. the immunosuppressed host. Therefore, we are working on several different viruses including Hepatitis E, SARS-CoV-2 and HSV-1.
As part of the “Netzwerk Universitäre Medizin”, we are establishing sequencing methodology and computational pipelines to sequence and reconstruct viral genomes of noroviruses directly from patient material in order to expand surveillance and help to track nosocomial infections
Drug resistance development during HSV-1 reactivation is a significant health burden. By pheno- and genotypically characterising biobanked HSV isolates, we want to generate a consistent dataset to develop and train an ML resistance prediction tool.
