Corneal donation and grafting

Research focus

Restoring corneal transparency represents the basis for precise optics. For this purpose, corneal donation is an invaluable and generous gift. Starting in the field of eye banking and extending over corneal transplantation methods up to patient care is a challenging and highly topical task.

Objective

Actually, the field of keratoplasty is rapidly evolving. It is crucial to gain evidence for well adapted donor selection, evaluation and preparation. This builds the basis for as well established and new keratoplasty techniques. Especially the lamellar techniques show a big potential for standardization and optimization.

Projects

  1. Influences on and outcomes of penetrating and lamellar keratoplasty techniques: Gaining insights into clinically relevant factors contributing to optimized visual acuity and quality of life for the patients
  2. New methods in modern eye banking: Artificial intelligence improves the technical basis for precise evaluation of the donor corneas quality parameters
