Transfusion Medicine and Gene Therapy in Freiburg

In recent years, a number of institutions with a focus on cell and gene therapy have been established in Germany. The Institute for Cell and Gene Therapy in Freiburg was founded in 2013. In 2017 it has been renamed into Institute for Transfusion Medicine and Gene Therapy (ITG), the name now reflecting the emphasis of transfusion medicine within the services of the institute. Besides providing the University Medical Center with all transfusion and transplantation related services, the objectives of the ITG include the exploration of new perspectives in the implementation of cell and gene therapy for patients suffering from HIV infection or rare immunodeficiencies.

The Institute für Transfusion Medicine and Gene Therapy in Freiburg therefore combines an established facility for patient care with specialized personnel for GMP-compliant manufacturing processes and research groups focusing on gene therapy. The ITG thus provides the best possible foundation for effective implementation of innovative translational therapy concepts.

The structure of the Institute for Transfusion Medicine and Gene Therapy is shown in the organizational chart
