Cell Therapy

Cell therapy is a form of therapy in which living cells are applied to a patient for therapeutic purposes. The use of blood components to treat, for example victims of an accident or cancer patients, is the most well known form of cell therapy. In this regards, the supply of the University Medical Center Freiburg with conventional blood products (erythrocytes, platelets and plasma) by the Department of Transfusion Medicine has been an established standard for many years.

In addition to these conventional forms of cytotherapy, cell therapy also includes the transfer of mesenchymal stem cells in regenerative medicine and blood stem cells or T cells for the treatment of leukemia or congenital and acquired immunodeficiencies.
