Whereas young patients are treated with intensive chemotherapy in our therapy sessions or with standard therapy, elderly patients first receive a careful evaluation of their health status in order to determine whether standard chemotherapy is an option.

The Medical Center – University of Freiburg is also one of the largest and most experienced stem-cell transplantation centers (in German) in Germany.
In recent years, CAR T cell therapy (in German) has gained in importance for the treatment of leukemias.

In clinical trials, we test new drugs designed to improve the standard therapy – under strict monitoring by the Federal Institute for Drugs and Medical Devices. The Competence Center for Leukemias and Preleukemias is among the leading clinical trial centers in the therapy of elderly patients with leukemias, MDS, or MPN in particular. Clinical leukemia research at the Medical Center – University of Freiburg is supported by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research and German Cancer Aid, among other organizations.
