Prof. Dr. Peter Kohl

Professor Peter Kohl, MD/PhD, IEKM-Director: Cardiovascular diseases are the leading cause of death worldwide. They affect roughly one third of the population, giving rise to a substantial reduction in personal fitness and quality of life.

The team at the Institute of Experimental Cardiovascular Medicine conducts internationally recognised mechanistic basic research, develops innovative medical methodologies, and provides tailored training for the next generation of leading scientists, with the aim of advancing new approaches to the treatment of cardiovascular disease—the world's leading cause of mortality.

To achieve this, we develop and apply novel technologies that enable us to investigate the heart and its cells with previously unattainable spatiotemporal resolution. By gaining a comprehensive understanding of the heart's electrical and mechanical signalling, we seek to establish the foundations for the development of innovative diagnostic and therapeutic strategies that will shape the future of cardiovascular medicine. Some of the highlights and milestones along this journey are featured on our News page.

The Institute also serves as a focal point for integrated research programmes that bring together medicine, biology, natural and engineering sciences, as well as mathematics and computational modelling. Examples include the Collaborative Research Centre 1425 Make Better Scars (2020–2025), and the Research Unit 6051 ‘The Interstitium as a Foundation of Cardiac Function’ (since 2026). In addition, we lead an internationally unique intensive training programme designed to foster the development of outstanding early-career researchers in the field of cardiovascular health.

Further facts and figures about our activities, can be found here.

Interview with Professor Kohl in the local newspaper Badische Zeitung, published on 27 May 2026.
