As a university visceral surgery center, we focus on treating patients with complex diseases of the internal organs. These include, in particular, diseases of the oesophagus, gastrointestinal tract, liver, pancreas, bile ducts and hormone-producing glands. The surgical and interdisciplinary treatment of cancers of the internal organs is a particular focus of our clinic.

An outstanding feature of our clinic is the complex minimally invasive surgical procedures, whereby we perform both classic laparoscopic and robot-assisted surgery. Not only patients with benign diseases, but increasingly also patients with cancer of the oesophagus, stomach, liver, pancreas and colon/gastrointestine are treated by us using minimally invasive techniques.

In addition to the treatment of tumor diseases, our clinic has specially designated surgical teams working in the fields of bariatric surgery, reflux surgery, paediatric surgery, proctology, endocrine surgery, transplant surgery, endoscopy and state-of-the-art surgical intensive care, which is very important for the perioperative treatment of our patients.

Our Clinic for Orthopaedics and Trauma Surgery is a level I trauma center: As a maximum care facility, we are available 24 hours a day for emergency patients with injuries of all degrees of severity. Minutes can be crucial, especially for the most seriously injured, which is why all specialist departments are involved in trauma surgery diagnostics and early treatment in accordance with the latest medical standards.

Our clinic is also a point of contact for patients with diseases, deformities and injuries to the entire musculoskeletal system, from infants to the elderly. In addition to around 22,000 outpatient emergencies, there are a further 25,000 planned outpatient treatments, and more than 5,000 patients are treated as inpatients by our team of 45 doctors and 79 nursing staff.

Our clinic is one of the largest specialized facilities for thoracic surgery and thoracic endoscopy in Germany. Medical care goes hand in hand with research and teaching: Freiburg has one of the few chairs of thoracic surgery in Germany and the whole of Europe.

We treat patients with diseases of the brain, spine, spinal cord and nerves. Diseases that cannot be cured using conservative methods are treated by surgery.

We specialize in the diagnosis and treatment of diseases of the brain and spinal cord as well as neuromuscular diseases. High-resolution imaging is possible using computer tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). Not only anatomical structures can be depicted, but also cerebral blood flow, metabolic processes, brain function and the fiber tracts of the brain.

Myelography allows the spinal canal to be visualized if, for example, an MRI is not possible. Angiography is used not only to visualize the arteries and veins of the brain and spinal cord, but also to treat vascular malformations and constrictions of the arteries supplying the brain and spinal cord in a minimally invasive ("interventional") manner.

In addition to interventional neuroradiology, which is a focus of our clinic, we also specialize in epilepsy diagnostics and paediatric neuroradiology. Children can also be examined in the magnetic resonance tomograph in the children's clinic.

We treat children and adolescents with benign and malignant blood diseases and tumors on an outpatient and inpatient basis. The focus is on comprehensive care for our patients, with doctors from various specialist disciplines working closely with the nursing staff and other specialists, but especially with the parents.

After a detailed diagnosis, which may include a tissue examination in addition to modern imaging techniques (ultrasound, X-ray, MRI, scintigraphy), a treatment plan is drawn up across all disciplines. Our clinic has extensive experience in bone marrow and blood stem cell transplants. Depending on the type of disease, the patient's own stem cells (autologous transplantation) or those of another person (allogeneic transplantation) are used.
